Healthcare professionals

GSK is a science-led global healthcare company that researches and develops innovative healthcare products in the areas of Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Consumer Healthcare. Our products are used by millions of people around the world, with the aim of helping them to do more, feel better and live longer.

Doctors and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) are valued partners, providing GSK with scientific and medical expertise and insights into patient care. We believe this partnership is fundamental to the progress of medical science and to help meet patient and public health needs.

Our work with healthcare professionals

During 2015 we are introducing changes to the way we work with HCPs, with the aim of bringing greater clarity and confidence that whenever we talk to a doctor, nurse or other prescriber, it is patients’ interests that always come first.

We are strengthening our dedicated medical and scientific capability, and optimising the way we support HCP education using multiple channels. We are providing accurate information about our medicines that will help HCPs make the best treatment decisions for their patients. In parallel, we are the first company to end direct payments to healthcare professionals for speaking about our products, and are handing over decisions about sponsorship for attendance at medical conferences to independent third parties. The UK part of GSK, GSK UK Pharmaceuticals, is making no new arrangements to pay HCPs to speak to other prescribers on our behalf after 1 July 2015.

As part of our commitment towards greater transparency, we will continue to disclose any payments we do make to HCPs who provide consultancy to us. These payments must be appropriate for the services and expertise provided to us, not excessive and never an inducement or reward for prescribing our products.

We have been annually disclosing aggregate sums paid to HCPs since 2013, as have other members of the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). Our payments to HCPs, sponsorships to attend scientific meetings and congresses, and grants and donations to healthcare organisations in the UK are made in line with the ABPI Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry.

Furthermore, along with other ABPI member companies, we have agreed to disclose certain payments to individually named healthcare professionals from 2016. This is reflected in the ABPI Code of Practice as well as in the EFPIA Disclosure Code which has been adopted across 33 European countries.
