Executive Summary

Durham Dales Health and GlaxoSmithKline are engaged in Joint Working to enhance the management of Asthma to a standard of care defined by British Thoracic Society / Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (BTS / SIGN) guidelines.

Both parties have committed resources to support this project, which will run from September 2011 to June 2013.

The objective of this Joint Working project is to improve patient quality of life and health outcomes by ensuring patients understand their condition and prescribed medicines thereby improving self management. Identifying those patients who are complying with their medications but who still require an intervention to improve their control of asthma symptoms.

It is designed to support:

  • To improve quality of life, symptom control and healthcare outcomes for asthma patients.
  • To proactively manage asthma in primary care, this should result in healthcare delivered closer to home.
  • To increase the numbers of patients receiving an asthma review in line with British Thoracic Society / Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (BTS / SIGN) guidelines.
  • To improve inhaler technique through regular education.
  • To increase patient understanding and self management of their condition and treatment.
  • To provide consistent and structured patient training in a variety of healthcare settings including a standardised Medicines Use Review (MUR) by community pharmacists.
  • To improve pharmacy and primary care working to meet the needs of the patients.
