Making sure our products, processes and equipment are fit for purpose is an essential role in our business.
As a Chemical Engineering apprentice, you will develop skills and knowledge in GSK pharmaceutical processes, products and equipment. You will learn how our products are made to be able to confidently support routine production, new product introduction & validation as well as process improvement work.
Depending on your preferences, strengths and ambition, this apprenticeship could lead in many career directions including process engineering, technical specialist, EHS and operations management.
Achieve your career goals on our apprentice programme
You’ll receive tailored on-the-job training from our in-house experts, combined with early responsibility to help you develop and progress. Over the 5 years, you’ll be working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering - through a combination of distance learning and college attendance.
Working with both your line and programme manager we want to identify the right opportunities to help you succeed in the short term and throughout your career with us. You will also be assigned a buddy or a mentor who will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.
What will you do?
You can expect to work both individually (when appropriately trained) and as part of a team - taking responsibility for the quality, safety and accuracy of the work you undertake.
You will work across the site combining on-the-job learning with a programme of training and development. Your role will involve:
- Supporting complex manufacturing processes - ensuring quality, safety and accuracy.
- Learning about all aspects of process safety and environmental responsibilities.
- Working as part of a team of technical scientists and manufacturing technicians
- Analysing process data and identifying the root cause of problems
- Owning and delivering improvement and optimisation projects
- Supporting the design, introduction and commissioning of new process equipment and products
- Writing technical reports and validation protocols for pharmaceutical processes and equipment.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues from technical, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), laboratory, validation, engineering, logistics and planning.
You’ll be excited by the thought of:
- Gaining an understanding of a range of pharmaceutical equipment and processes as well as an understanding of their potential impact on product quality and patient safety
- Gaining an understanding of how to validate the processes and equipment to ensure they are fit for purpose
Developing an understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory requirements and their application within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
What qualifications do you need?
To be eligible for our Chemical Engineering apprenticeship programme, you will need:
- A minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent at grade 5-9 (A*-C) including at least a 5 in Maths, English Language (not Literature) and a Science.
- You must have or be expected to achieve 96 UCAS points (or 240 in the 2017 tariff) from your top three A-levels (or equivalent).
Your A-Levels must include Chemistry grade C or above. BTEC in Applied Science is acceptable as long as it meets the UCAS requirement.
Where will you be based?
Our Chemical Engineering Apprentice will be based at Ulverston. You will have an exciting opportunity to:
- Work and develop in both our Ulverston and Barnard Castle sites
- Potentially secure a permanent role in either location. The likely landing role for this apprenticeship is Ulverston.
