Research is at the heart of everything we do. It’s what enables us to pursue our mission of helping people to do more, feel better, live longer.
Through this research we either try to develop more effective ways of treating diseases for which medicines are already available or identify conditions which, as yet, have no treatment at all.
We work alongside many partners in carrying out our research, including other pharmaceutical companies, healthcare professionals and academic institutions.
It’s a slow and painstaking process that can take on average more than 12 years to move from an idea in the laboratory to a product that has been fully approved for use. But the safety and wellbeing of everyone who uses our products is our number one priority so this deliberate and steady approach is essential.
This also means that there can be many false leads along the way. In some cases we can investigate up to 25,000 different chemicals before discovering one that is suitable for use on humans.

Sharing our research
As part of our commitment to transparency, we are reporting the results of all our research, whether the outcomes are perceived to be positive or negative. You can read more about this commitment here.
By sharing intellectual property and know-how with other researchers and the scientific community in general we have developed an economically viable way to target disease in the developing world.
